While rare earth magnets, such as neodymium magnets, have a variety of commercial uses, it’s also important to understand and appreciate their strength so you handle them safely. Since rare earth magnets are so strong, they’re perfect for industrial and commercial uses – it’s practically impossible to demagnetize them and they are permanent magnets. Because of this, it’s crucial to handle them with diligence and care.
Follow these safety tips when working with neodymium to keep yourself and others safe.
  1. Protect your hands: always wear gloves as a precaution when working with rare earth magnets. Because of their strength, your fingers can get pinched, skin can get torn, or bones can even break if forced between two magnets.

  1. Protect your eyes: wearing eye goggles will protect you against any accidents. Though they are extremely strong, rare earth magnets are also very brittle; they can peel, chip, and crack, and the debris can easily scratch and harm your eyes.

  1. Handle with care: don’t underestimate the power of magnets .When dealing with large magnets, your finger, for example, can get crushed because of the strong magnetic field attracting other material.

  1. Keep away from children: because of their strength, magnets should be kept out of reach from children; they are especially harmful and fatal if swallowed.

  1. Do not handle with pacemaker: magnets can impact the efficacy of pacemakers, so it’s important to avoid neodymium magnets if you have one.

  1. Avoid magnetic media: neodymium magnets’ strong magnetic field can demagnetize your everyday media, like disks, credit cards, and even televisions.
